First Day of School: 10 Tips for LKG Parents

The first day of LKG is a big step for a three- or four-year-old — and often an even bigger one for their parents. Some tears at the gate are completely normal. These ten simple habits help most children settle in faster.

In the weeks before

  1. Talk about school positively. Mention the toys, songs and new friends. Avoid "you'll have to behave" type warnings.
  2. Visit the school if you can, even just to see the gate and the classroom from outside.
  3. Shift the routine early. Start waking up and eating breakfast at school-day times a week or two ahead.
  4. Practise small skills like opening the tiffin, drinking from the bottle and opening the bag zip on their own.
  5. Let them choose their bag. Children feel braver carrying something they picked. A small, light bag they can manage alone is best — see choosing a bag for LKG.

On the day

  1. Pack the night before so the morning isn't rushed.
  2. Keep the goodbye short and warm. A hug, a clear "I'll pick you up after lunch", and leave. Long goodbyes usually make it harder.
  3. Never sneak away. Always say goodbye, so they trust you'll come back.
  4. Be on time for pick-up, especially in the first week.

After school

  1. Ask specific questions. "What did you eat?" or "Who did you play with?" works better than "How was school?"

What to pack for LKG

  • Small tiffin and a snack box, in a lunch pouch
  • Water bottle
  • School diary in the front pocket
  • A spare set of clothes
  • Name labels on everything

If your child is still very upset after two or three weeks, talk to the class teacher — they've seen it many times and can help.
