20 Healthy Snack Box Ideas for School Kids
Share
The short break is often only 10 or 15 minutes, so the snack box needs food that's quick to eat, not messy, and still good at room temperature. Here are 20 ideas to rotate through the week.
Fruit
- Banana — the easiest, and Kerala's own nendran is filling
- Apple slices with a squeeze of lemon so they don't brown
- Guava wedges
- Papaya cubes
- Grapes, halved for younger kids
- Orange segments, peeled at home
- Pomegranate seeds in a small box with a spoon
Home-made bites
- Boiled egg, peeled
- Mini idlis with chutney powder
- Small chapati rolls with a smear of jam or ghee and sugar
- Sweet potato or tapioca pieces, boiled
- Dates and a few nuts (if the school allows nuts)
- Roasted chana or peanuts
- Homemade banana chips
- Ela ada or a small piece of unniyappam on special days
Light and crunchy
- Puffed rice with roasted peanuts
- Cucumber and carrot sticks
- Corn on the cob pieces
- Rusk or plain biscuits with a fruit
- A small sandwich cut into four
Packing tips
- Keep the snack separate from lunch so your child knows which to eat at which break. A small lunch pouch is perfect.
- Bite-size pieces help younger kids finish in a short break.
- Check the school's rules — some schools don't allow nuts or packaged snacks.
- Rotate. The same snack every day gets left uneaten.
