How to Clean a School Bag (Without Ruining It)
Share
School bags lead a hard life: muddy grounds, monsoon rain, spilt ink and the occasional leaking tiffin. A little care keeps a bag looking good for the whole year. Here's how to clean it without damaging the fabric, print or zips.
Before you start
- Check the care label inside the bag and follow it first.
- Empty every pocket and shake out crumbs and pencil shavings.
- Open all zips so water and air can get inside.
For small marks: spot clean
- Mix a little mild detergent or baby shampoo in a mug of cold water.
- Dip a soft cloth or old toothbrush and gently rub the mark in small circles.
- Wipe with a clean damp cloth to remove the soap.
For a full clean: hand wash
- Fill a bucket with cold or lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Soak the bag for 10–15 minutes. Avoid long soaks.
- Gently scrub with a soft brush, paying attention to the base and straps.
- Rinse in clean water until the soap is gone.
Avoid bleach, hot water and hard scrubbing on printed areas — they can fade colours and wear down designs. Unless the care label allows it, avoid the washing machine, which can bend the back panel and twist the straps.
Drying (especially in the monsoon)
- Hang the bag upside down with all pockets open so water drains out.
- Dry in shade with good air flow — strong direct sun can fade bright colours.
- In rainy weather, use a fan and stuff the bag with old newspaper to absorb moisture faster.
- Make sure it's completely dry before packing it, to avoid a musty smell.
Tiffin smells and leaks
Wipe the inside with a cloth dipped in water and a little baking soda or vinegar, then air it fully. Carrying the tiffin in a separate lunch bag or lunch pouch stops it happening again.
