Monsoon School Bag Guide: Keeping Books Dry in Kerala Rain
Share
In Kerala, the new school year and the monsoon tend to arrive together. Wet books, soggy notebooks and a bag that smells musty by July are all common. A few simple habits fix most of it.
Before the rains
- Get a rain cover that slips over the bag. They're inexpensive and fold into a front pocket.
- Use plastic book covers on textbooks and notebooks — the old brown-paper-plus-plastic method still works best.
- Keep a zip folder for homework sheets and the school diary.
On rainy days
- Close every zip fully — an open zip is where most water gets in.
- Keep the umbrella outside the bag in the side pocket or carried separately. A wet umbrella inside will soak everything.
- Tiffin and bottle outside too, in a separate lunch bag, so condensation doesn't drip onto books.
- Carry a small cloth in the front pocket to wipe the bag at school.
When the bag gets wet
- Empty it as soon as your child gets home.
- Open every pocket and hang it upside down so water drains out.
- Stuff it with old newspaper and keep it under a fan.
- Let it dry fully before packing — a damp bag quickly smells musty.

Musty smell?
Wipe the inside with a cloth dipped in water and a little vinegar or baking soda, then dry it completely in shade with good air flow.
