Trolley Bag or Backpack: Which Is Better for School?

When a child's school bag feels too heavy, many parents think about switching to a trolley bag. It's an understandable idea — wheels instead of shoulders. But for most children, a light, well-fitted backpack is the better choice.

What the School Bag Policy says

India's School Bag Policy 2020 recommends school bags with two padded, adjustable straps that sit on both shoulders, and advises that wheeled carriers should not be allowed, because they can hurt children while climbing stairs.

Trolley bags: the trade-offs

  • Stairs. Most schools have them. A trolley bag has to be lifted — usually with one hand, twisting the back.
  • Weight. The wheels, frame and handle make the empty bag much heavier.
  • Uneven ground. Kerala's roads in the monsoon, gravel paths and school buses aren't made for small wheels.
  • Crowded corridors. Trolleys trip other children.

Backpacks: why they work

  • Two straps spread the load evenly across both shoulders.
  • The weight stays close to the spine, where it's easiest to carry.
  • Hands stay free for stairs, railings and the school bus.
  • They're lighter when empty, so more of the 10% weight allowance goes to books.

The real fix for a heavy bag

If your child's bag is too heavy, the answer is usually less inside it, not wheels underneath it. Check it with our guide to how heavy a school bag should be, pack by the timetable, and move the tiffin to a separate lunch bag.

Choose the right backpack

Go by class, keep it light, and make sure the straps are padded and adjustable. Our 9-point checklist covers everything, and the size guide matches bags to classes from LKG to Class 10.
