How Heavy Should a School Bag Be? The 10% Rule, Class by Class
Share
Quick answer: A packed school bag should weigh no more than 10% of the child's body weight, as recommended by India's School Bag Policy 2020 for Classes 1 to 10. For a 25 kg child, that's 2.5 kg, including books, tiffin, bottle and the bag itself.
Heavy school bags are one of the most common worries we hear from parents. The good news: India already has a clear, simple guideline, and you can check your child's bag at home in two minutes.
The rule: no more than 10% of body weight
The School Bag Policy 2020, prepared by NCERT and issued by the Ministry of Education, recommends that a school bag — with everything inside it — should weigh no more than 10% of the child's body weight for students in Class 1 to Class 10. For pre-primary children, the policy recommends no school bag at all.
The same policy also recommends that bags be light, with two padded, adjustable straps that sit squarely on both shoulders, and it advises against wheeled trolley bags because they can hurt children on stairs.
What that means in kilograms
| Child's weight | Maximum loaded bag weight |
|---|---|
| 18 kg | 1.8 kg |
| 22 kg | 2.2 kg |
| 25 kg | 2.5 kg |
| 30 kg | 3 kg |
| 35 kg | 3.5 kg |
| 40 kg | 4 kg |
| 45 kg | 4.5 kg |
In Kerala, the General Education Department has spoken about keeping Class 1 bags between roughly 1.6 kg and 2.2 kg, and Class 10 bags between about 2.5 kg and 4.5 kg — very close to the 10% rule. A private member's bill on schoolbag weight is also before the Kerala Assembly in 2026, so this topic is only getting more attention.
How to check your child's bag at home
- Weigh your child on a bathroom scale.
- Weigh your child again while wearing the packed school bag.
- Subtract the first number from the second. That's the bag weight.
- Divide by your child's weight. If it's above 0.10 (10%), it's time to lighten the load.
7 ways to make the bag lighter
- Start with a light empty bag. Every gram the bag itself weighs is a gram less for books.
- Pick the right size for the class. A bag that is too big gets filled with things that aren't needed. Use our size guide.
- Pack by the timetable. Check each evening and carry only that day's books.
- Put heavy books closest to the back. This keeps the weight near the spine.
- Carry the tiffin separately. A small lunch bag or lunch pouch takes the tiffin and bottle out of the main bag.
- Use both straps, tightened so the bag sits close to the back — never on one shoulder.
- Clear it out weekly. Old notebooks, toys and wrappers add up.
Signs a bag is too heavy
Watch for your child leaning forward to walk, complaining of shoulder or back pain, red marks on the shoulders, or the bag sitting below the waist. If you notice ongoing pain, speak to your child's doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 10% rule include the tiffin and water bottle?
Yes. It's the total weight of the packed bag, including the bag itself, books, tiffin and bottle.
Do LKG and UKG children need a school bag?
The School Bag Policy 2020 recommends no school bag for pre-primary children. In practice, a small, very light bag for the tiffin, bottle and diary is enough.
Are trolley bags a good alternative?
The policy advises against wheeled bags because children have to lift them on stairs. A light backpack with two padded straps is better. See trolley bag vs backpack.
